God Does Not Need Us

In the title I quote my Pastor Kent McBay. But we need God! Our failures will not detract from His power. Though He does not need us, we need to obey Him. Although He does not need us, He chooses to make us new creatures indwelt and filled with the Holy Spirit, enabled and willing to serve Him. And then He trusts us to share His glorious gospel. He makes us obedient and leads us. Mordecai told Esther that if she did not obey, God would accomplish His absolute will in another way.

Esther 4:13: Then Mordecai commanded to answer Esther, Think not with thyself that thou shalt escape in the king*s house, more than all the Jews. 14 For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father*s house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?

John 2:23: Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did .24 But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, 25 And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.

Albert Barnes NT Commentary on Did not commit himself.

The word translated commit here is the same which in John 2:23 is translated believed. It means to put trust or confidence in. Jesus did not put trust or reliance in them. He did not leave himself in their hands. He acted cautiously and prudently. The proper time for him to die had not come, and he secured his own safety. The reason why he did not commit himself to them is that he knew all men. He knew the inconstancy and fickleness of the multitude. He knew how easily they might be turned against him by the Jewish leaders, and how unsafe he would be if they should be moved to sedition and tumult.

Matthew Poole*s Commentary:

Christ did not take all these seeming believers into his bosom, nor call them after him, nor maintain any familiar fellowship and communion with them; but made haste again into Galilee, till his time was come, knowing that in so public a place of danger they were not to be trusted; for being God blessed for ever, he had knowledge of the hearts of all men.

Philippians 2:13: For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
